Berries - Post-Production Woes

I wanted to get everybody’s thoughts on the post-production for the following image. I’ve been using Photoshop for a while, but I’ve just recently started using it specifically for post-production on my images, so I need all the feedback I can get. Anyways, here’s the original image:

Original Berry Image

The original was okay, but since I only had my telephoto lens with me at the time, I wasn’t able to get too close, and the in-focus berries here don’t stand out quite enough from the out-of-focus berries. So I decided to do some major color/contrast tweaks using a number of color adjustment layers in Photoshop. Here’s the result:

First color corrections

The colors in the above image remind me of the high contrast visual style of the movie 300 . . . which happens to look cool even with berries. However, even though I liked it, I was a little concerned that I would be the only one, so I decided to tone it down. So I copied the original image, placed it on a layer above the Frank Miller image, and reduced the opacity. Here’s the result:

Let me know what you think!

Excellent shot and composition. Like the DOF and how you focused in on the main subject.

Personally, I like the middle image, the 300 one. But then, I loved 300, so not exactly objective here…. :)

The 2nd image is my favorite, without a doubt. I am partial to high contrast and over exposure, so my vote certainly bias, but hey, it’s prettier.
You can really make out the focus best in the 2nd one because of the darkening and the higher contrast, giving it a more three dimensional perspective. The other two look a bit flat. Not to mention the colors are fantastic on the middle image, reminding me of the old fairy tales, still beautiful, but dark.

I like the second and third ones! :) Such vibrant color and… yumminess. :)
